Before entering the state of Ihram, a pilgrim must form a specific intention (Niyyah) for one of three types of Hajj. For the majority of international pilgrims, Hajj al-Tamattu is the prescribed and most practical method.
Meaning: "To enjoy" - the pilgrim enjoys the relaxation of normal dress between Umrah and Hajj.
• Sacrificial animal (Hady) is obligatory
• If unable to afford, fast 3 days during Hajj + 7 days after returning home
Meaning: "To join" - the pilgrim combines Umrah and Hajj in one continuous state of Ihram.
• Sacrificial animal (Hady) is obligatory
• More spiritually rigorous due to extended Ihram restrictions
Meaning: "To single out" - the pilgrim performs Hajj only, without Umrah.
• NO sacrificial animal required
• Often chosen by Makkah residents or late arrivals

The Prophet ﷺ said to his companions: "Had I not brought the sacrificial animal, I would have exited Ihram (done Tamattu)." He instructed those without animals to perform Tamattu. This indicates the ease and preference of Tamattu for those coming from afar.
