Frequently Asked Questions
What is Tajweed and why is it important?
Tajweed (تجويد) literally means "beautification" or "improvement." It refers to the set of rules governing how the Quran should be recited. These rules were established to preserve the exact pronunciation as revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Learning Tajweed is considered Fard Kifaayah (communal obligation), and applying it when reciting the Quran is Fard 'Ayn (individual obligation) according to the majority of scholars.
Can I learn Tajweed online as a complete beginner?
Absolutely. Our Tajweed programme is structured for all levels. Beginners start with Arabic letter recognition and basic pronunciation (Makharij), then progress to letter characteristics (Sifaat), and gradually advance to the more detailed rules. Each lesson builds on the previous one, and our qualified teachers provide personalised feedback to ensure you develop correct habits from the start.
How long does it take to learn Tajweed properly?
The theoretical rules of Tajweed can be covered in 3 to 6 months of consistent study. However, mastering the practical application — reciting fluently with correct Tajweed — is a lifelong journey of refinement. Most students achieve confident, correct recitation within 12 to 18 months of regular practice with a qualified teacher.
Do I need to know Arabic to learn Tajweed?
No. You do not need to understand Arabic to learn Tajweed. Tajweed focuses on pronunciation and recitation rules, not language comprehension. However, you should be able to read Arabic script. If you cannot yet read Arabic, we recommend starting with our Iqra Books programme to build your reading foundation first.
