٢ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ
Mal-qaari'ah
What is the Striking Calamity?
٣ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ
Wa maa adraaka mal-qaari'ah
And what can make you know what the Striking Calamity is?
٤ يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ
Yawma yakoonun-naasu kal-faraashil-mabthooth
It is the Day when people will be like scattered moths,
٥ وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنفُوشِ
Wa takoonul-jibaalu kal-'ihnil-manfoosh
And the mountains will be like fluffed wool.
٦ فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ
Fa-ammaa man thaqulat mawaazeenuh
Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],
٧ فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ
Fa-huwa fee 'eeshatin-raadiyah
He will be in a pleasant life.
٨ وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ
Wa ammaa man khaffat mawaazeenuh
But as for one whose scales are light,
٩ فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ
Fa-ummuhoo haawiyah
His refuge will be an abyss.
١٠ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ
Wa maa adraaka maa hiyah
And what can make you know what that is?
١١ نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ
Naarun haamiyah
It is a blazing Fire.

• "Al-Qari'ah" is a name for the Day of Judgment - it strikes hearts with fear.
• People scattered like moths - confused, directionless, drawn to light.
• Mountains - the most solid things - will become like fluffy colored wool.
• "Ummuhoo" (his mother/refuge) - Hell becomes the only home for the losers.
• The scales of deeds will determine eternal destiny.
